Project #3- The Dot

We read the story, “The Dot”, which was a fun story that one could read to their younger elementary students to encourage creativity. The story was about a teacher that framed a picture of a single dot on a paper that a student had created. This inspired the student to make many more projects based off of the idea of the dot.

We created our own dots using coffee filters and different types of media. We used crayons, oil pastels, water color paints, and water color crayons. All of the different medias reacted differently with water. The water colors and the markers bled when wet, but the crayons and oil pastels repelled the water. Seeing the reaction, I was able to change the media I used on the second coffee filter to have an outcome that I wanted.

Extension: In an upper elementary class, I would read this book to inspire the students to continue to use their creativity. I would let the students do a test run dot, where they could use all of the different types of media to experiment and figure out what ones they like the best. Then I would give them another dot and let them use their favorite medias that were available, and I would tell them to make their dot represent who they are as a person. I would have each student then present to the class and explain why they made their dot the way that they made it.
